How to create bundles on Shopify
Short answer. Shopify has no single bundle feature. There are four mechanisms: a componentised bundle product, a cart-level discount, a mix-and-match rule, and a buy X get Y discount. Componentised products keep inventory correct and get their own page; cart discounts stay flexible. A Shopify discount can never add a product to the cart, only reduce the price of something already in it.
Four mechanisms, what each does to your inventory, and the failure that catches most merchants out.
There is no single "bundle" feature in Shopify. There are four different mechanisms, they behave differently at checkout and in your inventory, and choosing the wrong one is why bundles quietly stop working. Here is each, plainly.
1. A bundle as a real product
You create a product called "Starter Kit", set a price, and sell it. Simple, and it gets its own product page, its own URL, and its own place in search.
The problem is inventory. Unless the bundle is componentised, Shopify has no idea that selling one kit should decrement three other products. You end up counting stock twice and overselling the components.
Shopify's bundle products fix this: components are linked, so stock is derived from what is inside. If you want a bundle that behaves like a product — photographed, merchandised, findable — this is the right mechanism.
2. A discount applied in the cart
The products stay separate. When a shopper's cart contains the right combination, a discount applies. Nothing new is created, nothing is double-counted, and inventory takes care of itself.
The trade-off is visibility: there is no bundle product to link to, so shoppers only discover the offer if you tell them about it on the product page or in the cart.
3. Mix and match, where the shopper chooses
"Pick any 3 and save 15%." You set a pool and a rule; the shopper assembles their own combination. This converts well because it gives the shopper agency, and it is how most build-a-box offers work.
It cannot be a fixed product — the combinations multiply — so underneath it is always mechanism 2, plus a page where the choosing happens.
4. Buy X, get Y
Strictly a discount rather than a bundle, but merchants look for it in the same place. Shopify's native automatic discounts handle "buy 2, get 1 at 50% off" perfectly well.
The catch that surprises people: a Shopify discount can only reduce the price of something already in the cart. It cannot add the free item. If the shopper does not put Y in their basket themselves, they get nothing — and they usually blame you rather than the mechanism.
Why a bundle discount fails at checkout
The most common complaint in this category is "the discount showed in the cart but not at checkout". Usually one of:
- Buy it now. That button builds a checkout straight from the product page and never touches the cart, so any cart-based discount is skipped. If you run cart-based offers, send shoppers through Add to cart.
- The automatic discount limit. A store can hold 25 active automatic discounts. Apps that create one per offer hit the ceiling, and the next one silently does nothing.
- Two apps competing. Shopify allows one Cart Transform per store. If a second app claims it, one of them stops working, and neither will tell you.
- Combination settings. Discounts only stack when explicitly allowed to. A shipping or order discount can block a product discount.
Choosing between them
Ask what matters more: a page you can market, or flexibility. If shoppers should be able to find and share the bundle, make it a real componentised product. If you want "any 3 for $40", or offers you change weekly, use a cart discount. Most stores end up running both.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have a built-in bundle feature?
Yes. Shopify offers a free first-party bundles app that creates fixed and mix-and-match bundles as componentised products, so inventory is derived from the components. It does not cover spend thresholds, automatic free gifts, or quantity breaks displayed on the product page.
Can I create bundles on Shopify without an app?
You can create a bundle as an ordinary product and set its price manually, but Shopify will not link its stock to the component products, so you have to manage inventory in two places and you will eventually oversell. You can also use a native automatic discount for buy X get Y offers without any app.
Why is my bundle discount not applying at checkout?
The four usual causes are: the shopper used Buy it now, which builds a checkout straight from the product page and skips the cart entirely; the store has reached its limit of 25 active automatic discounts; two apps are competing for Shopify's single Cart Transform slot; or the discount's combination settings prevent it stacking with another discount already applied.
Do bundles affect my inventory?
Only if the bundle is componentised. A componentised bundle product decrements each component when it sells. A bundle created as a standalone product with its own stock number does not, which is how stores end up selling components they no longer have.
