Free gift with purchase on Shopify

By the Bondi team at TechnoBrains · · 6 min read

Short answer. Shopify's discount engine can make a cart item free but cannot add one, so a native gift-with-purchase only works if the shopper adds the gift themselves. A working threshold offer needs something to add the gift line for them, while Shopify still applies the discount, and it must handle the shopper falling back below the threshold, the gift running out, and scoping the qualifying spend to one brand.

Why Shopify cannot add a gift to a cart on its own, and what a gift offer needs to survive contact with real shoppers.

Gift with purchase is one of the most reliable ways to lift average order value, and one of the more awkward things to set up on Shopify. The reason is a single constraint worth understanding before you evaluate any solution.

The constraint: discounts subtract, they do not add

Shopify's discount engine can make an item in the cart cheaper, including free. It cannot put an item into the cart. Nothing in the native discount system can.

So the native approach to "spend $50, get a free mask" really means: if the shopper happens to add the mask themselves, it becomes free. Most never do. They do not know the offer exists at the moment they are in the cart, and asking someone mid-checkout to go and find a specific product is a lot to ask.

That is why a gift offer needs something that adds the line on the shopper's behalf — and why the discount itself should still be applied by Shopify, so the price they were promised is the price they pay.

What a gift offer has to handle

The mechanism is the easy part. These cases decide whether the offer survives real traffic:

  • Falling back under the threshold. A shopper qualifies, the gift appears, then they remove an item. The gift has to leave too, or you ship it for nothing.
  • The gift counting toward its own threshold. If the gift has a real price and counts toward "spend $50", a shopper can qualify using the gift itself.
  • Running out. "While stocks last" means the offer must disable itself and clear gifts from open carts, rather than failing at checkout.
  • Scope. "Spend $50 on Brand A" must not be satisfied by Brand B. Getting this wrong is expensive, and invisible until someone reads the orders.
  • A shopper who removes the gift. Some do. Putting it back on the next page load is infuriating — treat a deliberate removal as an answer.

Scoping to one brand

Threshold offers are often funded by a supplier, which means they apply to one brand rather than the whole store. Two things to check in any setup: that the qualifying total counts only that brand's products, and that it is based on pre-discount prices — using discounted totals means your other promotions quietly change who qualifies.

A checklist before launching

  1. Set the threshold from your actual average order value, not a round number. A threshold below your AOV discounts orders you would have received anyway.
  2. Set the gift's inventory to what you can afford to give away, and leave a buffer for carts already in flight.
  3. Keep the gift out of the qualifying collection.
  4. Test the unhappy path: qualify, then remove an item, and watch what happens.
  5. Place one real order and confirm the gift is $0 on the order, not just in the cart.

Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify add a free gift to the cart automatically?

Not on its own. Shopify's discount engine can reduce the price of an item already in the cart, including to zero, but nothing in the native discount system can add an item. A native buy X get Y discount only makes the gift free if the shopper adds it themselves.

How do I set a spend threshold for a free gift?

You need an app that watches the cart, adds the gift line once the qualifying total is reached, and lets Shopify apply the discount that makes it free. Set the qualifying total on pre-discount prices, or your other promotions will quietly change who qualifies.

Does the free gift count toward its own threshold?

It should not. If the gift carries a real price and is included in the qualifying total, a shopper can reach the threshold partly by virtue of the gift itself. Check this before launching: it is invisible until you read the orders.

What happens when the free gift runs out of stock?

A correctly built offer disables itself and removes the gift from carts that still hold one, so nobody reaches checkout with an item that cannot be sold. Set the gift's inventory to the allocation you can afford and leave a buffer for carts already in flight.
