Tiered pricing and volume discounts on Shopify
Short answer. Shopify's automatic discounts support a minimum quantity, so buy-3-save-10% works natively and free. What they do not do is display the tiers on the product page, which is where most of the value is. The decision that matters is whether quantity counts per product or across a collection, because merchants usually assume the second and configure the first.
Quantity breaks are easy to configure and easy to get subtly wrong. The counting rule is where most of the trouble lives.
Volume discounts — buy more, pay less per unit — are the least glamorous offer type and often the most profitable, because they raise order value without giving anything away to shoppers who were only ever going to buy one.
What Shopify does natively
You can create an automatic discount with a minimum quantity: buy 3 or more of a product, get 10% off. That works, and it costs nothing.
What it does not do is tell anyone. The discount applies in the cart, but the product page shows a single price. A shopper deciding between one and three units never learns that three is cheaper per unit, so the offer only rewards people who were already buying three. Showing the tiers is most of the value.
Volume pricing that displays natively on the storefront is a B2B feature, not something the standard online store does for retail shoppers.
The counting rule nobody asks about
This detail decides whether an offer behaves the way merchants expect, and it is worth settling before launch:
- Per product. Three of the same coffee earns the tier. One each of three different coffees earns nothing.
- Across a collection. Any three items from the range earn the tier.
Merchants usually assume the second and configure the first. Then a shopper puts one of each in the cart, sees no discount, and emails support. Decide deliberately, and write the promise on the product page in the same terms: "buy 3 of any coffee" and "buy 3 coffees" mean different things to the person paying.
Line splitting
A subtle one. Shopify does not always keep the same product on a single cart line. Add two now and one later with a different property, or let another discount target part of a quantity, and the same product ends up on two lines. Anything that counts per line rather than per product will miss the tier the shopper thinks they earned.
Rounding
Percentage discounts are computed per unit and truncated to whole cents. On a $19.99 item, 15% is $2.9985, which becomes $2.99 off — so the shopper pays $17.00, not $16.99. It is one cent, and it is also the difference between your product page and your checkout agreeing. Whatever you display should be calculated the same way the discount is.
Setting the tiers
Two tiers usually beat four. Look at your existing orders: find the quantity people already buy, put the first tier one step above it, and the second at a quantity plausible for a stock-up. Discounts at quantities nobody buys cost nothing and earn nothing; the tier just above the norm is where the money is.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify support tiered pricing?
Shopify's automatic discounts support a minimum quantity, which covers buy 3 or more and save 10 percent. Volume pricing that displays natively on the storefront is a B2B feature, not something the standard online store shows retail shoppers.
Can I show quantity discounts on the product page?
Not natively. A native quantity discount applies in the cart while the product page continues to show a single price, so shoppers deciding between one and three units never learn that three is cheaper per unit. Displaying the tiers is where most of the conversion value sits.
Should quantity count per product or across a collection?
Decide deliberately, because merchants usually assume across a collection and configure per product. Per product means three of the same item earns the tier. Across a collection means any three items from the range do. Write the promise on the product page in whichever terms you chose.
Why did a shopper not get the volume discount?
Usually because their units sat on separate cart lines. Shopify splits lines when properties differ or when another discount targets part of a quantity, so anything counting per line rather than per product misses the tier the shopper thinks they earned.
